Using Your Own Domain Name
Home > System Tutorials > Using Your Own Domain Name
Most users of Press Publisher eventually want to use their own domain name instead of the sub-domain used during the initial signup and installation process.
For example, your original signup domain would look like this:
YourName.PressPublisher.us
You now want to make it:
YourName.com
Here is the process of getting this set up.
Purchasing The Domain Name
First you must register the domain name (if you don’t already have one). This provides you with control and ownership over the domain name. If you do not have one, we like for registering domain names. It should cost under $10 per year to own your domain name.
Pointing The Domain Name To Press Publisher
Once you have your domain name registered you will need to point the domain name to us.
There are two ways of doing this.
- Changing the DNS on the domain name (Easiest, most common, and recommended)
- Pointing the A Records to Press Publisher (Advanced, rare and NOT recommended)
IMPORTANT WORDS OF CAUTION
Before you make either of these changes take note:
- Do you have a current website under the domain name? If you do either of the options above (change the DNS or A Record) you will lose the old website. Make sure you migrate as much content to the new site (our system) as possible. However, many people just scrap the old site.
- Do you have email? If you are going to change the DNS the old hosting email accounts won’t work any longer, but that’s the point. However, we need to set up any emails on our system PRIOR to changing the DNS. Send us an email with the emails needed and a password for each.
- Before you make any changes, notify us that you are going to be pointing the domain name to us. We need to set this up on the server.
Changing the DNS Servers
Once you are ready to change the DNS servers you will have to log in to the place you registered your domain name (your registrar). These can also be referred to as “NS” or “Nameservers”.
We can also do this for you, but you would need to send us the login details.
The Press Publisher Nameservers (DNS) are:
ns1.presspublisher.com
ns2.presspublisher.com
ns1.presspublisher.com
ns2.presspublisher.com
Changing the A Record (Not Recommended)
Changing the A Record allows us to host the website but someone else manages your email. This is a more advanced method and is very rarely requested. We provide email with all paid accounts and have a nice webmail system. It also requires you to pay hosting fees elsewhere for a service we provide included in our fees.
Should you decide to point the A Record only to our server you will have to set it to the following IP address:
96.30.1.110
96.30.1.110
Nearly Done
Ok, so you have changed the DNS and it’s now pointing to our server. Here is what’s left.
- Notify us immediately. While we will have set up the domain name on our servers, we will also have to modify your account so your existing website shows under the domain name.
- IMPORTANT! Sometimes after changing the DNS on a domain, it can take from 24-72 hours to “Fully propagate” across the internet. Most services will update in a few hours, and some in just minutes. However, some pesky services can take longer. This is completely outside our control and is universally a problem and is sometimes frustrating.
- Once your Press Publisher website is showing on the domain name there is ONE more thing to keep in mind . . . You no longer log into the CMS at your old location. You will now log in under your domain slash “/” cms.
For example:
yourdomain.com/cms
That’s it!
While there is a lot of detail listed here, it’s really pretty easy. However, we preffer caution and education during this process.
